The Five Vital Functions of a Seed Slot

Dr Baker identifies five functions that every seed slot must perform:

  1. Create an opening in the soil for seed placement
  2. Place the seed at the correct depth consistently
  3. Close the slot to ensure seed-to-soil contact
  4. Retain moisture — pore space humidity around the seed is critical for germination
  5. Allow seed to access nutrients (placed separately if possible)

The key insight: pore space humidity within the seed slot is a germination resource that most opener designs destroy. Strip tillage, in particular, eliminates this by drying out the disturbed soil zone.

Key Differentiators

Why the Combo Type Scores Highest

  • Creates an inverted T-shaped slot: vertical cut with horizontal wing at the base
  • Seed placed to the side of the disc — slot does not need conventional closing
  • Separate seed and fertiliser placement (different layers within the T-slot)
  • Minimal surface disturbance — preserves the humidity micro-environment around the seed
  • No hairpinning of crop residues into the slot

Why Strip Tillage Scores Lowest

  • Destroys pore space humidity — the germination resource that undisturbed soil provides
  • Creates a tilled band that dries out rapidly
  • Residue on the surface is a carbon-sequestration resource that strip tillage buries or disturbs
  • Higher energy requirement than disc-based systems

Crop Residue as a Resource

Baker argues that crop residue should be treated as a carbon-sequestration tool, not an obstacle. The best openers work through residue without incorporating it into the soil. Designs that require residue removal or burial forfeit this benefit.

Implications for Drill Selection
