Blackgrass Management Under No-Till

Blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides) is one of the most difficult and costly problems on UK arable farms, and the primary driver of resistance to no-till adoption. Counter-intuitively, zero-till — not more cultivation — is the most effective long-term control strategy.


Why No-Till Reduces Blackgrass

The 80% Mortality Rule

  • 80% of blackgrass seeds die in the soil in year one
  • With no soil inversion: year 2 mortality = 80% of remaining 20% = effectively 96% cumulative mortality over 2 years
  • Tillage brings buried seeds back to germination zone — resetting the mortality clock

Stale Seedbeds

  • Zero-till allows creation of long stale seedbeds
  • Tony Reynolds: GPS mapping used to identify weed patches for selective treatment rather than field-wide overdosing
  • david-taylor (Waterloo Farm, Fringford): moved autumn drilling date from September to October — extended chitting window by 4+ weeks

Tony Reynolds’ Approach

  • Zero-till reduces blackgrass incidence significantly
  • Combined with judicious Atlantis (iodosulfuron + mesosulfuron) at 0.4 kg/ha
  • GPS mapping to identify weed patches; selective rather than blanket application

Slug Management (Blackgrass Interaction)

Zero-till helps control slugs (which can be a concern when drilling into residues):

  • Slugs need rotting material as food source → in fertile no-till soil they have alternative feed; seedlings are not the only target
  • High worm populations eat slug eggs
  • High ground beetle populations (also supported under no-till) eat slug eggs
  • Natural balance reduces pelleting dependence

Vaderstad Carrier Approach (Conventional-Minded Solution)

David Taylor, Waterloo Farm, Fringford (2,000 acres: winter wheat, hybrid winter barley, oats, beans, OSR):

“Pure direct drilling won’t work in every case” — uses Carrier for stale seedbed creation as cultural blackgrass control:

  1. Carrier in immediately after combine (shallow 2-inch tickle, chops trash)
  2. Leave field as long as possible to maximise chit
  3. Deep cultivate to ~9 inches (disc/tine implement + double press) after long chit
  4. Glyphosate before and after deep cultivations, and in front of drill
  5. Hybrid barley varieties: “extremely prolific in spring, out-runs blackgrass”
  6. Two winter barleys in rotation → start combining July → even longer stale seedbed

Replaced 5m Carrier with 8.25m Carrier L825 for output ~200 acres/day (keeps pace with combine).

Variety Strategy

  • Hybrid winter barley: grows vigorously in spring, outcompetes blackgrass
  • Longer rotations: spring crops, beans break the cycle
  • Belepi wheat: Alex Shutes trialling as part of blackgrass strategy
  • Moving away from W-W-OSR tight rotations to 7-year rotations with diverse species

Key Principle

“The development of herbicides has enabled arable growers to break all the rules; they have been able to ‘farm out of a can’ as their prime means of weed control, rather than using rotations and other cultural methods. One of the results of that reliance on chemicals is that blackgrass has become an extremely serious problem.”
