The Concern
In no-till systems, phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) accumulate in the top few inches of soil because:
- Surface-applied fertiliser is not incorporated by tillage
- Crop residues decompose on or near the surface
- No mechanical mixing redistributes nutrients
Some advisers recommend occasional tillage to “correct” this stratification. The Nebraska research argues this is unnecessary and counterproductive.

Practical Implications
- No different soil sampling strategy needed for no-till vs conventional fields
- Do not till to redistribute nutrients — this destroys the biological infrastructure that makes stratification harmless
- Maintain high residue cover (90%+) to sustain the earthworm and microbial activity that cycles nutrients through the profile
- Surface P and K levels may appear high on standard soil tests, but this reflects the system working correctly, not a problem
