C:N Ratio Fundamentals
The ideal C:N ratio to feed soil microbiology so it can efficiently consume biomass and cycle nutrients is 24:1.

- Higher C:N → slower decomposition → more protective biomass on soil surface
- Lower C:N → faster decomposition → less surface cover but faster nutrient cycling
- Daugherty advises staying on the high side of C:N: “one of the first things that destroys soil function is leaving it naked”
- As soil biology functions increase over years, more carbon needs to be managed in the mix

Cover Crop Rotation Risks
Brassicas — Clubroot Risk
- Growing brassicas (especially turnips, also radishes) back to back can cause clubroot
- Clubroot spores survive in soil for up to 20 years
- Particularly dangerous if growing brassica cash crops (OSR)
- Recommendation: only seed a brassica every other year
Peas — Soil Fatigue
- Peas grown back to back can show declining production
- Risk of increased white mould and other pathogens
- Recommendation: only use peas every other year
Cereals — Seed-Borne Disease
- Saving and replanting cereal cover crop seed for 4–5 years → replanting diseases (ergot, rust) back into the field
- Buy clean, tagged, high-quality seed even for cover crops
- “Whether the farmer is growing his own cereal grains or purchasing from another farmer, they really need to consider the cost of adding additional disease pressure”
Cereal Escapes
- Annual ryegrass escapes can persist → appear in subsequent wheat or malting barley → crop unmarketable
- Plan 5-year cropping plan to identify escape risks

Management Principles
- Design in the fall, manage in the spring — same with summer mixes
- It’s an art, not an exact science — “you cannot write one recipe and just stick to it”
- It’s better to manage a simple mix well than choose a “silver bullet mix” and manage it poorly
- Always have a Plan B — sometimes the soil “dominates what species it needs growing”
- Learn to read your field — no soil test is more effective than a grower who can read symptoms
- A cover crop is almost always better than no cover crop — don’t be afraid of the risks
