Overview of mechanical weed control methods as alternatives or supplements to herbicides, driven by increasing herbicide resistance and regulatory pressure. Based on Dr Nicola Cannon (Royal Agricultural University) and Michael Horsch’s hybrid farming vision, both from Direct Driller Issue 8.
Three Main Systems
1. Tine Weeders (Harrow Comb)
- Available 6–24m wide; highly adjustable tine widths and angles
- Working speed: ~10 km/h — fast coverage
- Multiple passes possible per season
- Best results in warm, windy, dry conditions
- Must complete before GS31 in cereals or stem extension in broadleaves
- Causes 10–35 kg/ha nitrogen mineralisation (useful spring boost but also OM loss)
- Contractor cost: ~£22/ha
2. Inter-Row Camera-Guided Hoes
- Camera guidance (e.g. Garford Robocrop) detects individual crop rows
- Requires minimum 20cm row spacing for camera recognition
- Drill width should match hoe width; GPS helps keep rows straight
- More crop must be visible than weed for cameras to function
- Contractor cost: ~£45/ha
3. Above-Canopy Weed Removal (CombCut / Weed Surfer)
- Cuts weeds taller than the crop canopy
- Useful for preventing weed seed return rather than full weed control
- Most effective before or during early flowering
- Does not uproot weeds — used alongside other methods
- Contractor cost: ~£30/ha

Horsch Hybrid Farming Vision (Michael Horsch)
Michael Horsch advocates combining organic mechanical techniques with conventional chemistry — “hybrid farming”:

Horsch Machines for Mechanical Weed Control
- Horsch Transformer — adjustable inter-row hoe with camera systems
- Horsch Cura — weeding harrow; stepless spring adjustment 500–5000g; up to 12m; non-electronic
- Horsch Finer — ultra-shallow cultivator (2–5cm); forward-turned spring tines maintain optimal cutting angle; up to 12m
Wider Row Spacing
- 15cm rows are difficult for mechanical weeding
- 25cm rows allow speeds up to 15 km/h
- Horsch sees wider rows becoming popular across both organic and conventional farms with herbicide resistance problems
Driverless Weeding
- Horsch envisions small, lightweight self-propelled weeders working long hours autonomously
- Light weight + no product to carry = minimal compaction

Practical Considerations
- Mechanical weeding cannot replace herbicides alone — must be used with diverse rotations, competitive varieties, and cultural controls
- Wet conditions cause transplanting rather than killing of weeds
- Stimulates further weed germination → may need multiple passes
- Multiple passes increase OM oxidation and soil biology disturbance — tension with no-till principles
- Best as part of an integrated system, not a standalone solution
